Background, writing and release

On June 14, 2012, Adam Young announced via Twitter that he would be collaborating with Carly Rae Jepsen on a new song, claiming that it would be released on June 26, 2012.[1] On June 20, 2012, he released the single, "Good Time," via his SoundCloud account.[2][3] The song was released on iTunes on June 26, 2012. "Good Time" was written by Matt Thiessen, Brian Lee and Young himself. On August 23, 2012, the song became available in the United Kingdom before the official single release as a digital download on iTunes from Owl City's album The Midsummer Station.

Reception

Critical reception

It received generally positive reviews from critics, including Billboard: "It only makes sense that he's joined by Jepsen...[on] a track that could become a radio staple for the rest of the summer,"[4] and Entertainment Weekly: "'Good Time' goes down easier than a frozen margarita at a beachfront tiki bar."[3] On his site The Re-View, British critic Nick Bassett referred to the song as "an uplifting, out and out pop duet which will most definitely ensure that neither artist has to settle for a 'one hit wonder' tag."[5]
Slate's Forrest Wickman also called it a "worthy successor" to "Call Me Maybe". He pointed to how "the song opens with a familiar story, and then subverts it, by removing anything that's not squeaky clean." Like Kesha in "TiK ToK," the singer begins the song waking up after a night of hard partying, in his clothes with a song by Prince inside his head. But unlike them, Wickman observes, he's "on the right side of the bed", not hung over, and ready to go out again the next evening. "When a children's choir is tossed in at the end, it's a bit gratuitous, but in this wholesome song why not," he concludes. "'Good Time' is a guilty pleasure, without the guilt."[6]

Chart performance

In the US, the song debuted at No. 32 on the US Pop Songs chart, and No. 18 on the Billboard Hot 100, for the week dated July 4, reaching No. 8 a few weeks after.[7] The song is the second to make the top ten on the chart for both artists; Owl City's first top ten single since "Fireflies", as well as Carly Rae Jepsen's first top-ten single since "Call Me Maybe," making Jepsen one of the few artists in history to have two top ten songs in the same week. It sold a million in the United States by August 29, 2012,[8] and was certified Platinum by the RIAA.[9] It has sold 2,249,000 copies in the US in 2012.[10]
In Canada and New Zealand it peaked at No. 1, becoming Owl City's first number-one single and Jepsen's second in both countries. The song debuted at No. 17 on the UK Singles Chart on August 26, 2012. The song charted before the single release due to the song being available from Owl City's album, The Midsummer Station. It rose to 5 the following week, becoming Owl City's first top 5 UK hit since 2010's "Fireflies."

Music video

Background

The music video directed by Declan Whitebloom was released on July 24, 2012 on Owl City's official Vevo. On the same day, Adam Young tweeted about the video saying, "It's always a #goodtime going camping with @CarlyRaeJepsen" with a link to the video on YouTube. The video features both Jepsen and Young. It was filmed in Harriman State Park's Silvermine Picnic Area.[11]

Synopsis

Young and Jepsen in the "Good Time" music video
The music video begins with Jepsen waiting by her car in front of an apartment when her friends then come out and join her. They then drive, in a Fiat 500, away from the haze of New York City. As they drive away, the video alternates between shots of Jepsen and Young with his own group as they drive down a forest road. They eventually meet up at a small cabin-like building and start drinking slushies. As Jepsen's verse starts, she is shown walking through the forest with other shots of the rest of the group walking and coming to a campground. Once the hook and chorus begin, Young is seen by a lake, along with other shots of Jepsen and the rest of the group. Then as the day turns darker, they start dancing around a bonfire. Throughout the rest of the song, the group dances and parties through the night. Product placement was used throughout this video, including images of Fiat, Baby G and Beats products.

Live performances

Owl City and Carly Rae Jepsen performed "Good Time" at America's Got Talent Wild Card results show on August 22, 2012,[12] and the next day on Today.[13] The duo also performed it in New York on August 25, 2012 during Arthur Ashe Kids' Day, an event that marks the start of the U.S. Open;[14] The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on August 28, and Conan on August 29. Jepsen performed "Good Time" with Cody Simpson in Believe Tour.

Lawsuit

In October 2012, Alabama singer-songwriter Allyson Nichole Burnett filed a copyright infringement suit, authored by THR power lawyer Neville Johnson, in California federal court against Jepsen and Young as well as several publishing companies and performing rights groups. She claimed that Young, Matt Thiessen and Brian Lee copied a prominent motif of her 2010 song, "Ah, It's a Love Song". Burnett's song is in an F key while "Good Time" is in the key of E flat, but there are also other similarities with both of these songs, including an identical pitch sequence (5-3-5-3-2), melodic contour (down, up, down, down), rhythmic construction (8th rest, 8th note, 8th note, 8th note, 8th note, 8th rest, quarter note), timbre (textless vocals) etc.[15] Burnett was also suffering "emotional and psychological damage" from fans asking why she copied the song, although there isn't any specific cause of action pinned to her distress.[15]

Believe is the third studio album by Canadian recording artist Justin Bieber, released on June 15, 2012 by Island Records. The album marks a musical departure from the teen pop sound of his previous releases, and incorporates elements of dance-pop and R&B genres. Intent on developing a more mature sound, Bieber collaborated with a wide range of urban producers for the release as well as some long-time collaborators, including Darkchild, Hit-Boy, Diplo and Max Martin. Bieber co-wrote twelve songs (plus 3 deluxe-edition bonus tracks) with many hired songwriters, and the music was arranged by session musicians.
"Boyfriend" was released as the album's lead single on March 26, 2012. The track received mixed reviews, with several critics citing comparisons to fellow vocalist Justin Timberlake.[2] Despite its lukewarm critical response the single was a commercial success, debuting at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 with 521,000 digital units sold in its opening week.[3] A series of promotional singles were then released preceding the release of the album, and on June 26 it was confirmed that "As Long as You Love Me" served as the second official single from the album.[4]

Believe has received generally positive reviews from music critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album received an average score of 68, based on 14 reviews, which indicates "generally favorable reviews".[18]
While BBC Music noted Bieber's ongoing "tween appeal,"[21] it also examined his gradual stylist evolution from his previous album. The New York Times noted the search for maturity Bieber exhibited. It complimented the natural strength of his voice, which did not need as much technical enhancement as it did previously.[29] However, Slant Magazine criticized the production needed to "slice, dice, and Auto-Tune [Bieber's] notes into shape"[28] Entertainment Weekly praised the pop star's evolution, calling the album both a "reinvention and a reintroduction."[22] Rolling Stone noted the deeper voice and more intense beats found on the album, although it lampooned one of his euphemisms for newfound sexual maturity.[27]
The New York Times noted the difficulty Bieber faced in creating the album—a tension between his love of R&B and the profitability of pop music—while suggesting that his "savvy compromises" made the conflict manageable."[29] Entertainment Weekly praised the variety of audiences for the album, calling it "the rare album that tries to be everything to everyone and largely succeeds."[22]
Reviews of the vocals on specific songs were mixed. The New York Times review complained of certain songs where Bieber "sounded bored" and un-like himself, although other tracks were said to show him when he "leans on his instincts." The review credited Bieber for his "limber and wounded" vocals. It suggested that Bieber's voice would continue to evolve, and that in a few years it could fully express "angst". It said Bieber was "more credible when begging or retreating",[29] while BBC Music stated similarly that "his confidence, for the most part, [is] played down."[21]
A large number of reviews compared Bieber to Justin Timberlake,[21][27][29][30] a once-teenage pop star who achieved great success during his evolution from teenage boy band member to young adult. Most found the situations very different, saying Bieber was better suited to pursuing his own style rather than follow in the footsteps of Timberlake. The New York Times, however, complimented his references to Michael Jackson as aspirational.[29] Meanwhile, reviewers tended to praise Bieber's work with other pop stars. BBC Music said that, despite an abundance of guest contributors, Bieber is "never overshadowed."[21] Additionally, Wordxlife.com thought that by including other artists such as Big Sean, Nicki Minaj, and Drake on his album, he is signaling that he is serious about making more mature music.[31]
Assessments of the long-term impact of the album generally avoided calling Believe a revolutionary step forward. The Independent roundly criticized the artist's lack of innovation, calling it a "pitifully timid affair".[23] The New York Times noted that while Bieber was not ushering in radical changes to pop music, he was at least playing to his personal strengths. Billboard noted the singer's potential with future releases, pointing out "multiple songs that hint at what Bieber could become someday."[30]

Commercial performance

Believe debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with first-week sales of 374,000. It was Bieber's fourth number-one album.[32] It dropped two spots in its second week to number three with sales of 115,000 copies.[33] Believe was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) on July 31, 2012,[34] and has sold 1,324,000 copies in the US in 2012.[35]
The album sold 57,000 copies in its first week in Canada, debuting atop the Canadian Albums Chart.[36] In the following week, the album fell to number two selling 18,000 copies, behind Linkin Park's Living Things.[37] It also debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart with sales of 38,115 copies, making Bieber the second youngest male solo artist ever to reach number one.[38] In Japan, the album entered the Oricon Weekly Albums Chart at number seven, selling 13,886 copies.[39] As of July 26, 2012, the album has sold over 98,000 copies in Canada.[40] In Brazil, the album was certified platinum by Associação Brasileira dos Produtores de Discos (ABPD) within three days of release.

Acoustic version

On December 14, 2012, Bieber announced on The Ellen Show that he will be releasing an acoustic album of Believe. It is set to release on January 29, 2013.
